Introduction

Our client applied for the European Commission tender and won a translation contract. Diskusija was entrusted with the localisation of all educational content for the Baltic States.

Challenges

  • It was necessary to select linguists who would match tender qualifications criteria.
  • The materials contained facts which had to be accurate and adhere to EU terminology and EU law.
  • The content had to be portrayed differently, taking into consideration specific age groups of the target audience.
  • Some of the most talented translators had no experience working with the XTM tool.

Solution

Together with our client, we preselected linguists to apply for the European Commission tender. The original documents signed by our candidates were gathered and submitted. The application was successful and our client was awarded the contract.

Localisation of a wide range of materials was needed: articles, presentations, lessons, games, videos, e-learning modules, news, etc. The linguists had to be universal enough to convey the message in both an accurate and entertaining manner.

We kept the terminology consistent and adhered to EU terminology databases. The legal acts across the target language countries were consulted where necessary.

The team was highly aware of target age groups to keep learning materials understandable and stylistically appropriate.

The workflow consisted of translation, editing, QA and layout checks.

Last but not least, we had to teach translators and editors how to use the XTM tool, since some of our resources had never worked with this tool. Diskusija’s project manager took on and succeeded in this mentor role.

Results

European audiences have EC programme access in their native languages. The educational content is presented in both an informative and fun way. The content reads well and is adapted to specific target age groups.
